American Elderberry
(Sambucus conadensis)

A large native shrub that is preferred species for wildlife habitat and shelter belts in moist areas. Fruit is used in jellies and syrup. It is a very decorative shrub with prominent clusters of white flowers that bloom later than most shrubs. Fruits ripen from late July into September.

Site requirements: Elderberry does best in a medium textured, slightly acidic soil. They can be somewhat drought tolerant once established. They need to be in sun and are intolerant to alkaline soils.
