Silver Maple
(Acer saccharinum)

Silver maple is a large beautiful tree with yellow fall color.  An excellent selection for locations prone to flooding as it can tolerate standing water for several weeks.  It tends to have weak wood due to its rapid growth and is also prone to iron chlorosis in high pH soils.  To maintain tree structure and prevent limb breakage prune major limbs to half diameter of trunk.

Purchase Size: 4-5 feet
Price/5: $14.00
Price/10: $23.00
Growth Rate: Fast
Average Height: 80-100 feet at maturity
Hardiness: Zone 3

Site requirements: Prefers moist sites, but can adapt to drier sites with unrestricted rooting.  Low tolerance to high pH soils.  Its vigorous shallow root system may cause sidewalks to buckle, and may cause damage to underground pipes.
