Utah's soil conservation districts are actively involved in water quality issues
and improvement projects throughout the state. Of prime concern to the
conservation districts is assisting Utah farmers and ranchers with issues related
to animal feeding operations (AFOs). UACD has teamed up with other conservation
partners in a nationally recognized strategy to address water pollution from AFOs.
Utah's plan calls for a voluntary, incentive-based approach to address
non-point source pollution caused by livestock operations. Working together, UACD,
the Utah Farm Bureau, Utah State University Extension, Utah Department of Agriculture
& Food, Utah Natural Resources Conservation Service, Utah Department of Environmental
Quality and producer groups have worked out a strategy that emphasizes voluntary
cooperation.
The Utah
Strategy to Address Water Pollution from Animal Feeding Operations outlines
the plan: partners will assess the problem, identify operations at greatest risk
and provide technical and financial assistance to landowners. Utah has wrapped up the statewide inventory of AFOs (See related news
release.), the first step in the state strategy.
Utah conservation
districts are committed to preserving Utah water quality and providing ag operators
with the resources they need to maintain productive, profitable operations. Links
